Samsung plans to set up fourth factory

GEORGE TOWN: Samsung Malaysia Electronics Sdn Bhd will set up its fourth factory in the country in south Seberang Prai on the Penang mainland if all goes well.

Its vice-president (sales and product marketing) Chan Lock said the company had earlier put the plan on hold following rumours that the second Penang bridge would be scrapped.

“Now that the construction work of the bridge is continuing, we’re in the midst of discussion with the state government on the plan,” he told reporters before presenting a RM65,000 grant from Samsung Hope to the Children’s Protection Society (CPS) here yesterday.

Samsung Hope is a new Samsung corporate philanthropic initiative aimed at bringing communities together to help underprivileged children.

Chan said the company would build the factory near the bridge if the plan materialises.

He also said the company would not retrench any workers in the first half of the year but had frozen recruitment as a cost-cutting measure in view of the global economic slowdown.

He said the impact from the slowdown was not very obvious in the electrical appliances sector because there was still demand for these items.

Chan claimed that the company recorded the highest sale of LCD televisions and side-by-side refrigerators among other brands in Malaysia and was number two in the nation for the sale of mobile phones and washing machines.
