Government kept its word, says Wee

Wee: Government has kept its word

PETALING JAYA: The opening of SJK (C) Chung Hwa in Section 17 is proof that the Government has delivered its promise and proven sceptics wrong.

Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong said many quarters were sceptical that the school would be opened.

“With the reopening of the school, we hope to work together and achieve greater heights,” he told reporters yesterday after visiting the school.

The school replaces the original SJK (C) Damansara after it was relocated in 2001 to Tropicana several kilometres away. While the majority of pupils moved, a few parents refused to send their children to the school.

A “Save our School” (SOS) committee was set up to manage the original site. SJK (C) Chung Hwa, a school with only 14 pupils in Parit, Perak, was relocated to Section 17 Petaling Jaya.

Dr Wee added the earlier reasons given for the school to be closed had been addressed by a special team set up by the ministry.

He said a team had been set up to monitor traffic jams and road safety in May, which also found the noise level in classrooms manageable.

He said the number of students had been restricted to not more than 600 to control the traffic situation and would only have a morning session to avoid traffic jams.

Also present at the school were some SOS committee members who protested the appointment of trustees for the board of directors. Former SOS committee secretary Tommy Chin alleged the elected trustees were not democratically picked.

Dr Wee, when asked, denied the allegations and said the trustees were unanimously picked by members of the alumni, sponsors and SOS committee.
