26 teams take part in Arumugam Cup

THE Spiderman R. Arumugam Cup, in memory of the former international goalkeeper, was an ideal platform for youngsters to gain exposure.

The one-day knock out competition, catering to the Under-20 age group, held at the Yayasan FAS ground in Kelana Jaya, attracted 26 teams from the Klang Valley. The sponsors were Milo, Line-7 and 100 Plus.

Tournament patrons T. Mohan and Datuk A. Balakrishnan commended the organisers - Nilam Puri FC and Football Association of Selangor (FAS) - for initiating the tournament in rememberance of Arumugam, who was considered as one of the best goalkeepers in Asia.

“The tournament enlightened the younger generation about Arumugam. In fact, the organisers should initiate another youth tournament in memory of Mokhtar Dahari, who was in the same league as Arumugam. It is unfortunate that the two great footballers are not with us but we should never forget their services to Malaysian football

“A good way to remember them is to have competitions for youngsters in their name,” said Mohan after the prize giving ceremony.

Mifa-Batu Caves became the champions after a 2-0 win over Gemilang Semenyih in the final. Mifa-Batu Caves’ goals were scored by R. Chandran and Azri Alwan Nordin.

Mifa-Batu Caves received RM1,000 and prizes from Milo and Line-7 while Gemilang Semenyih took home RM500.

Losing semifinalists - Goodwill and Dengkil Brothers - won RM300 each and medals.

Mifa-Batu Caves coach S. Sivakumar said they were proud to be winners of the competition held in memory of Arumugam.
