Batu Kawa project in line with Sarawak’s aims

KUCHING: A proposed new township in Batu Kawa here is in line with the Sarawak government’s policy to decentralise the development of Kuching, said Second Minister of Planning and Resouce Management Datuk Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.

He said the state’s aim was to transform Kuching into a organised, well-planned city equipped with modern facilities to enhance the quality of life for city dwellers.

“Our policy is to spread development around Kuching and not concentrate on the city centre.

“We want to concentrate on tourism in the centre of Kuching with the development of hotels and beautification of the riverfront.

“I’m happy that areas we have developed in our decentralisation policy like MJC, Samariang, Tabuan Jaya and Matang have been successful and I believe this new township will also achieve success,” he said at an earth-breaking ceremony for Pasaraya Wira Indah recently.

The RM80mil project comprising 89 shophouses is part of a mixed commercial and residential project to be developed as a new township over the next 10 years by Kuching City Mall Development Sdn Bhd.

Awang Tengah said the project with gross development value exceeding RM250mil would boost the state’s economy.

“This big investment in the property sector is timely.

“With its strategic location, the project will provide potential for business and generate spin-off effects for the increasing population in surrounding areas,” he said.

Meanwhile, Kuching City Mall managing director John Tiong said the shophouses to be built in two phases were scheduled for completion in 2011.

“It is milestone launch for our project covering 41.7ha. The project will be developed in 15 phases over 10 years.

“When completed, there will be 132 commercial units comprising three-storey shophouses, single-storey lock-up shops, a large shopping complex and 659 double-storey terrace and semi-detached houses,” he said.

The development will include an open-air market, food court and pedestrian mall.
