Hungarian lifter hospitalized with elbow injury

BEIJING: Hungarian weightlifter Janos Baranyai was taken to a hospital Wednesday after dislocating his right elbow during a lift in the men's 77-kilogram division.

Baranyai was trying to lift 148 kilograms (326.3 pounds) in the snatch when his elbow popped and his forearm bent backward. He fell to the floor, shaking and crying out in pain.

Janos Baranyai, of Hungary, grimaces on the platform after dislocating his right elbow while attempting to lift 148 kilograms in the snatch of the Group B of the men's 77 kg of the weightlifting competition at the Beijing 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

The 24-year-old Baranyai was carried off the platform and taken by ambulance to a local hospital, said Benny Johansson, a technical controller at the event.

It was not immediately clear how serious the injury was.

"If the ligaments are damaged then it could take several months to heal,'' Johansson said.

He said elbow injuries are uncommon in weightlifting competitions, but "it happens once in a while at this level.''

The men's 77-kg competition was scheduled to continue later Wednesday with the top group of lifters. - AP
