Chan appointed mayor of Kuching

KUCHING: Businessman James Chan Khay Syn, 58, has been appointed the new city south mayor.

The state cabinet approved Chan's appointment at its meeting at Wisma Bapa Malaysia on Thursday, said state Environment and Public Health Minister Datuk Michael Manyin.

Chan, who is Harwood Timber Sdn Bhd general manager, takes office on June 1. No date has been fixed yet for the swearing-in ceremony.

Chan's appointment came nine months after the sudden death Chong Ted Tsiung, who was Kuching’s first non-politician mayor.

The mayorship has traditionally been held by a Sarawak United People's Party's (SUPP) nominee.
