RM1.8mil collected for cyclone victims

Generous donations for cyclone victims

PETALING JAYA: The generosity of Malaysians was proven yet again with more than RM1.8mil collected for victims of Myanmar’s cyclone victims through The Star Myanmar Relief Fund.

Star Publications (M) Bhd group chief operating officer Datin Linda Ngiam presented a cheque for RM1,847,171.06 to Mercy Malaysia executive council member Dr Ahmad Faizal Perdaus at Menara Star Tuesday.

Witnessing the presentation was Star Publications group managing director Datuk Steven Tan. Also present was The Star group chief editor Datuk Wong Chun Wai.

Tan, who thanked individuals and corporate figures who donated generously to the fund, said it had always been The Star’s tradition to quickly respond to humanitarian needs.

Of the amount, RM63,000 was collected via credit card payments made through Star Online since Thursday.

The fund was incepted on May 7, days after Cyclone Nargis had devastated Myanmar.

The official death toll for the deadly storm remains at 78,000. The Star Myanmar Relief Fund will officially close on Friday.
