Terengganu opens East Coast's largest stadium

KUALA TERENGGANU: Seri Paduka Baginda Yang DiPertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin officially opened the East Coast's largest stadium, a magnificent 50,000-seater in Gong Badak here, on Saturday night.

The 270mil Stadium Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin will be the venue for the 12th Malaysia Games (Sukma) to be held from May 31 to June 9.

Some 40,000 people braved a heavy downpour to witness the opening.

Terengganu Mentri Besar Datuk Ahmad Said said work on the stadium commenced on March 27, 2005 and was completed on schedule.

"We are proud to have such a stadium and promise to be the best host for the Sukma games," he told the crowd.

Ahmad said the stadium is equipped with state-of-art facilities and could be also used for football and other sporting activities.

The opening ceremony continued until early Sunday morning despite the heavy rain, with performances by Datuk Siti Nurhaliza and Anuar Zain.

There were also performances from music and dance troupes clad in resplendent traditional costumes.

Also present at the ceremony were the Head of the Regency Advisory Council (MPPR) Tengku Sri Panglima Raja, Tengku Baderulzaman Sultan Mahmud and State Secretary Datuk Mokhtar Nong.
