Opposition makes inroads in Pahang

BENTONG: Barisan Nasional’s tight grip on Pahang loosened when it lost four state seats and two parliamentary seats to the Opposition.

In the last general election, the coalition had swept all the 14 parliamentary seats and 41 of the 42 state seats.

Many of the seats won by Barisan Nasional candidates also saw reduced majorities while MCA stalwart and Deputy Internal Security Minister Datuk Fu Ah Kiow lost the Kuantan parliamentary seat to PKR's Fuziah Salleh by 1,826 votes.

DAP’s Leong Ngah Ngah and Choong Siew Onn won the Triang and Teras seats while PAS’ Syed Mohammed Tuan Lonnik wrested Beserah from the coalition.

PKR’s Azan Ismail won the Indera Mahkota parliamentary seat while independent candidate Ho Yip Kap took the Tanah Rata state seat in a surprise victory.

However, in Bentong, Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob as well as MCA youth chief Datuk Liow Tiong Lai were returned to their state and parliamentary seats of Pelangai and Bentong, respectively, with comfortable majorities.

Incumbent Ketari assemblyman Dr Ng Keong Chye won with a majority of 882 votes and incumbent Bilut assemblyman and Pahang MCA chief Datuk Hoh Khai Mun won with 1,108 votes.

Incumbent Sabai assemblyman Datuk M. Davendran – the sole MIC representative in Pahang – pulled ahead with just 145 votes.

In Raub, Wanita MCA chief Datuk Dr Ng Yen Yen trumped her DAP opponent Abu Bakar Lebai Sudin with a 2,752-vote majority, but Teras assemblyman Datuk Chan Choon Fah fell.

The coalition maintained power in other state and parliamentary seats.
