‘Papaya farm’ brothel busted

PENANG: A brothel popular with local businessmen was busted with the arrest of 23 vice workers from China and Vietnam at Jalan Transfer here.

The women, in their 20s and 30s, were rounded up at 6pm on Wednesday by a state anti- vice team which had been mo- nitoring the premises for some time.

The brothel popularly known as bok kua huey, which literally means papaya farm in Hokkien, had been in operation for some time.

A check by The Star showed that businessmen brought their clients to the premises for entertainment before sealing their business deals.

The women, who entered the country as tourists, were requi- red to entertain their ‘guests’ by allowing themselves to be fon- dled.

They were then compensated with tips by the men they accompanied. They also provided sexual services at a price if the guests made a request.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Azam Abd Hamid said the women had since been remanded by a magistrate’s court pending investigations.

“We are compiling a list of constantly raided outlets so that their licences will be revoked upon our recommendation to the district office.”

He also warned that brothel operators might find themselves banished from the state under the Restricted Residence Enactment if they insisted on continuing with their operations.

ACP Azam said 505 foreign vice workers from countries such as Uz-bekistan and Thailand were nabbed last year.

“We have launched an operation codenamed Ops Noda to conduct raids on such premises and ensure that the district does not turn into a vice centre.”
