Election strategist among new faces

PENANG: DAP election strategy adviser and researcher Liew Chin Tong is among three new candidates proposed by the Penang DAP to contest in the coming general election.

The others are blogger Jeff Ooi Chuan Aun, 52, and political scientist Prof Dr P. Ramasamy, 58.

State party chairman Chow Kon Yeow said the party’s candidate selection committee would decide where to field them if they were accepted as candidates.

He said between 20% and 30% of the Penang DAP candidates would comprise new faces, whose names would be announced in phases.

Newcomers: (from left) Liew, Ooi and Dr Ramasamy have been recommended by the Penang DAP to contest in the elections.
“(DAP deputy secretary-general) Chong Eng always laments that it is difficult to get more DAP women leaders.

“So, we are trying to field a new woman candidate,” he said.

Ooi was born in Kedah, Dr Ramasamy is from Perak while Liew, is from Selangor.

Meanwhile, Ishwar Nahappan, the son of the late Tan Sri Athi Nahappan, a former MIC deputy president and the country’s first Law Minister, has joined the DAP.

Ishwar, 57, said he would spend the next few weeks helping the DAP campaign for the upcoming polls.
