PETALING JAYA: SJK (C) Chung Hwa will replace the original SJK (C) Damansara in Section 17 here from January.
The Selangor Education Department will name its principal before the new academic year starts on Jan 5.
Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong, who made the announcement at a press conference at the site yesterday, said: “I believe the name Chung Hwa is widely acceptable among the Chinese community.”
The Education Ministry closed SJK (C) Damansara in 2001 on the grounds that it no longer provided a conducive learning environment because of traffic jams and noise pollution from the Sprint Highway.
A new Damansara school has since been built in Tropicana, about 5km away. A majority of the original Damansara pupils moved to Tropicana and an SOS committee was set up to manage the original site.
However, a few parents refused to send their children to Tropicana. Because of that, Ruan Liang Temple in Damansara New Village in Section 17 here doubled as a primary school for the past seven years.
Dr Wee said that refurbishment of the school, such as the installation of wiring and piping systems, would be completed within two weeks.
On the problem of traffic congestion around the school, he said he had received a report by experts on ways to overcome that.
Also present at the press conference were Save Our School (SOS) committee acting chairman Hew Wah, Wanita MCA chief Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun, and representatives from the ministry.
Hew said the new SJK (C) Chung Hwa can take up to 600 pupils. To date, 110 have registered for the coming intake. He hopes that more parents will send their children to the school.
