Ahmad Fuad is new mayor of KL

KUALA LUMPUR: Housing and Local Government Ministry secretary-general Datuk Ahmad Fuad Ismail has been appointed the new Datuk Bandar or mayor, ending months of speculation and confirming The Star’s report on Thursday.

Outgoing mayor Datuk Ab Hakim Borhan did not get an extension on his two-year tenure which ends Dec 13.

Ahmad Fuad’s appointment was announced by Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Mohd Sidek Hassan.

He will take over as the ninth mayor of the country’s biggest local authority officially on Sunday, Dec 14.

The news however did not come as a surprise to many as he had always been a target of speculation even during the time of former mayor Datuk Mohamad Shaid Mohd Taufek.

Ahmad Fuad was picked for his extensive local government experience, sources had earlier said.

“He has the dedication and aspirations needed to carry out the ministry’s visions and agenda to bring Kuala Lumpur closer to being a world-class metropolis," they said.

Ahmad Fuad, 56, comes with 30 years experience in government, seven of them as the head of the Subang Jaya Municipal Council.

He served with the Public Services Department for six years and took over as Penang Development Corporation general manager in 2003.

He was appointed Housing and Local Government Ministry secretary-general in 2006.

He hails from Kedah and holds a Bachelor of Arts (History) from University Malaya and a Masters degree in Public International Affairs from the University of Denver in the United States.
