ALMOST 30 years ago, Pitera was discovered when scientists noticed the beautiful, youthful hands of sake brewers.
It took years of research involving over 350 kinds of yeast strains before SK-II discovered a unique strain that produces an ingredient that was effective on skin. This led to the creation of SK-II’s first skincare product, the Facial Treatment Essence.
SK-II Pitera is not a yeast extract, but rather, a metabolic solution generated in the fermentation process of a unique strain of yeast.
This yeast ferment filtrate has been proven in laboratory tests to increase the metabolism of skin cells. This, in turn, restores the skin’s renewal cycle.
Takashi Yoshii, senior manager for Global Technical Marketing at the Procter & Gamble Kobe Technical Center, explains, “Pitera, a naturally-occurring liquid from the yeast fermentation process uses an exclusive yeast while other skincare brands are based on yeast from beer.”
So, what does it really do? The seven known benefits of Pitera are it helps adjust the skin’s rhythm, replenishes and retains moisture, tones the skin texture, adjusts the pH level of the skin, controls the generation of dark spots, soothes sunburned skin and helps control the secretion of sebum.
Unlike some skincare products that include fragrance, SK-II believes otherwise as Shige Terao, research and development director for Global Personal Beauty at the Procter & Gamble Kobe Technical Center, says, “The distinct smell in SK-II skincare is due to the fermentation process. That ensures the efficacy of the product, so we don’t want to change it nor do we do any synthetic masking of the odour.”
Also, to maintain the natural state of the ingredients, Terao adds that SK-II products do not contain alcohol, to avoid any possible allergic reaction as well as to cater to the Muslim customers around the world.
Yoshii further explains that SK-II skincare is designed for any skin type, and it is suitable for both women and men of all ages. In fact, the Facial Treatment Essence feels like water so even if you have oily skin, it gets absorbed easily.
For anyone unsure of a product to start with, Yoshii says, “I would recommend the Facial Treatment Essence as an entry product as it is like a one-stop shop that your skin will benefit from.
“Then, if you have other concerns such as wrinkles, age spots or pigmentation, then you can include the other products in the SK-II range that will address these specific concerns.”
In Malaysia, the top three best sellers include the Facial Treatment Essence, Whitening Source DermDefinition and the Signs Treatment Totality, with the Facial Treatment Mask being known as a favourite perk-me-up beauty product before special occasions.
In Japan, the masks are known as “a bride’s best friend”, because women apply them daily for three months prior to their wedding day to ensure dewy and translucent skin! – SANDRA LOW
