Higher allowance for NS trainees from this month

PEKAN: National service (NS) trainees will get RM150 monthly allowance effective this month, up from RM100.

This means the Government has to fork out a total of RM49.5mil this year for the 110,000 trainees compared to RM30mil for 100,000 trainees last year.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the 50% increase was a recognition of their commitment to the training.

Najib, who is also Pekan MP, said the Government hoped that the increment would have a positive impact on the trainees and encourage them to be more spirited in their efforts to meet objectives set in the NS programme.

National Service Training Council chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said the higher allowances would be an added incentive for trainees and help those from poorer backgrounds.

“We welcome the increase as inflation has also affected the prices of essential items in the camps,” Lee said, adding that trainees would now have a little extra to use for these expenses.

Lee said the request for a bigger allowance for trainees was something he had made last year after discussing it with the NS training department director-general.
