Wood collector survives croc attack

Seeking treatment: Yahya being brought to Sarawak General Hospital in Kuching Thursday after he was attacked by a crocodile at Sungai Gelugar in Santubong.
KUCHING: A man has been warded in hospital after being attacked by a 4m-long crocodile at Sungai Gelugar, Pulau Salak in Santubong, near here.

Yahya Jamali, 36, is warded at the Sarawak General Hospital with injuries on his left ear, left arm and stomach.

He was attacked by the crocodile while searching for bakau wood at about 7am yesterday.

“I was in waist-deep water near the river bank when the crocodile suddenly appeared and attacked me,” he said from his hospital bed.

He said he might have poked the crocodile in the eye when he struggled with it before it submerged into the river.

Yahya, who was alone, then boarded his small boat and sought help from a factory nearby.

He said this was the first time that he was attacked by a crocodile in four years of harvesting bakau wood in the area.
