PUTRAJAYA: It's a chip off the old block, as they say.
For Mohd Zaiza Zainal Abidin, becoming a professional footballer is a natural step. After all, his father is former national player Zainal Abidin Hassan.
Having played football since his school days, Mohd Zaiza is now well on the way in following his dad's footsteps he has been selected to be part of the football team playing for the World University Games (Universiade).
We hope to make Malaysia proud, said Mohd Zaiza, a first-year undergraduate at Universiti Putra Malaysia majoring in Communications.
My father has encouraged me to try my best.
Mohd Zaiza is among 75 students in the Malaysian contingent for the Universiade to be held from Aug 8-18 in Bangkok, Thailand.
Higher Education Minister Datuk Mustapa Mohamed said it was important to develop talents at university level.
We want to produce wholesome students who are good in their studies as well as co-curricular activities, he said before handing over the Jalur Gemilang to chef-de-mission Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Wahid Samsudin.
In the Universiade 2005, Malaysia won a bronze medal for taekwondo, he added.
