Jac and OAG come out tops

PUTRAJAYA: The country's first Malaysian Idol Jaclyn Victor and band sensation OAG came out tops amid stiff competition to be the icons of Malaysian music last night.

Jaclyn was a clear favourite from the start in the Ikon Malaysia contest, brushing aside contenders Dayang Nurfaizah and Akademi Fantasia star Mawi.

OAG also lived up to expectations by outvoting Flop Poppy and Def-Gab-C.

The winners each took home US$2,500 (RM8,550), a trophy and the right to represent the nation in the upcoming Ikon Asean, where they will pit their talents against performers from Indonesia and the Philippines.

Last night's two-hour finals at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre was telecast live over Astro Ria (Astro Channel 4).

Jac, as she is better known among fans, belted out two medleys in her performances.

The first medley was of Jangan Tinggal Daku and One Thousand Million Smiles while the second medley was of Gemilang, Cepat-Cepat and Impian

OAG first performed a medley comprising Akustatik and PerMYsuri, followed by the medley of Generasiku and MerDAYka

The selection of the winners was based on 70% judging by a jury comprising professional musicians Ramli MS. Mac Chew and Jenny Chin and 30% of fans' SMS votes.

The champions received their awards from Astro Ria channel manager Khairul Mizan, Record Industry of Malaysia chairman Sandy Monteiro and Ikon Media group managing director Richard Voon.

The Ikon Asean show will be held on Aug 12, also at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre here.
