Ministry wants to reclassify ketum leaves, drinks under Dangerous Drugs Act

JITRA: The Internal Security Ministry wants ketum leaves and drinks classified under the Dangerous Drugs Act soon.

Internal Security Minister Datuk Mohd Johari Baharum said the Attorney-General’s Chambers had already received a proposal to reclassify ketum leaves and drinks under the Act.

The addictive ketum leaves and drinks are presently classified under the Poison Act.

Ketum has been in the news for the past few years mainly because some people have been using its leaves as a drug that can give them a high akin to some banned narcotics.

It has been reported that many stalls sell drinks made from ketum leaves and since it is cheap (RM1 a packet), many youths are using it as an alternative to other drugs especially ganja.

“I do not know the status of the proposal, but I hope that the changes will be made soon to curb ketum addiction and prevent immoral activities that can arise from it,” Johari said.
