New documents suggest Umno has origins in KL

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno has its origins at Sultan Sulaiman Club in Kampung Baru here based on documents discovered recently.

Culture, Arts and Heritage Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim said the documents were unearthed recently when some work was being carried out at the club.

“The National Archives of Malaysia gave us a few documents that may lead to a new debate,” he said.

“There are enough documents to show that it is not totally correct to say everything of Umno started in Johor Baru.

“It also started at the club,” he said during tahlil prayers in remembrance of Malaysia's past leaders in conjunction with the Archives' 50th Anniversary at the National Mosque.

Dr Rais said much information could be gathered from the documents and researchers would be invited to examine various aspects of Malaysia's history including the origin of Umno.

“Who suggested the name 'Umno'? What was the resolution made at the club, compared with what happened in Johor Baru?” he said.

He said the National Archives would be upgraded to a level of the Public Record Office in Surrey, Britain, and the Congress Catalogue in the United States.

“I will bring this up with the Cabinet. The archives should be seen a source of knowledge in our country,” he said.
