MAS staff in Kuching airport achieve zero accident rate

KUCHING: Malaysia Airlines staff achieved a zero accident rate at Kuching International Airport last year.

MAS occupational safety manager Ahmad Kamal Muhamad said there were no accidents involving staff or the workplace on the ground.

"This is nothing to do with aircraft incidents, we're talking about accidents on the ground under my department of occupational safety and health," he added.

He also said that thanks to the zero accident record, Kuching was chosen by MAS to host the first of its safety and health campaign this year.

The next safety campaign will take place in Johor Baru in April, followed by Penang and Kota Baru later in the year.

MAS Sarawak and West Kalimantan area manager Shauqi Ahmad, who launched the campaign at the airport here Monday, said its objective was to increase awareness and understanding among staff on actively managing safety in the workplace.

"Sometimes accidents do occur that are out of our hands, but what we can do is to minimise the risk.

"The campaign will help to inculcate safety habits in our staff. We want safety to be at the top of their minds when they are at work," he said.

The two-day campaign, themed "Safety First", featured an exhibition on safety by MAS and related organisations including Malaysia Airports Bhd, MASkargo, Department of Civil Aviation, Customs and police.

The state Health Department and Sarawak General Hospital also took part to provide health screening and blood donation services at the airport.
