Lady Luck smiles on Anuar

LUCK is a huge factor in golf, a fact that was not lost on Anuar Mohamed Isa when describing his victory in the 13th leg of the Celcom Power Golf at Impian Golf and Country Club recently.

Anuar was a little surprised by his win. The 10-handicapper, who had put up a solid display which yielded a gross score of nine-over-par 81, had thought that it would not be good enough for a win.

However, his 32 points, gained with some miraculous display on the greens, earned him the A Medal title by three points ahead of Hen Yet Keow.

“Lady Luck was smiling at me,” said Anuar.

“I had some fantastic shots to tie a few holes and made a few impossible putts to win,” added the delighted champion who won on his second try, having come close at Palm Garden where he had finished runner-up.

One such occasion was the par-four, eighth hole, where, after overshooting the green with his second shot, Anuar’s putt from 10 feet off the putting surface hit the pin, spun and came to rest two inches from the cup for an easy tap-in par.

Luck was also the factor cited by B Medal champion Zainul Ariffin Abd Majid. Playing in a highly competitive group, the 16-handicapper clinched the winner at the second last hole, the par-four, ninth hole (he started from the 11th tee).

While his flightmates struggled on this hole, Zainul was untroubled to win the hole and the 10 skins accumulated. Zainul eventually triumphed with 34 points, three points better than runner-up Terrence Lee, who beat Alvin Chew Beng Yee on countback.

The C Medal category was hotly contested with only 0.75 point separating the champion and the runner-up. Yau Wai Heng amassed 21.75 points to finish ahead of Mohamed Rahim Samoan. Lee Eh Sin took third place, a further point behind.

With their victory, the three medal champions qualified for the semi-finals in Kunming, China, this Sept 13-16.
