Special prayers for Hindu god

KUALA LUMPUR: Hindus held special prayers in their homes and visited Sithi Vinayagar temples to perform prayers on the Vinayagar Sathurthi (the birthday of Lord Vinayagar, the elephant-headed deity) yesterday.

Thousands thronged the Kottumalai Pillayar Temple in Lorong Pudu Lama here from dawn to take part in the kaalai abishegam (morning prayers), and special prayers in the evening and night.

The road leading to the temple was closed to traffic from Saturday to accommodate the big crowd of Hindu devotees.

Many devotees brought milk, flowers, fruits and special sweetmeats like mothagam and different varieties of kozhukattai, a favourite of Vinayagar.

A devotee, M. Subramaniam, 42, said the first prayer of a Hindu is always to Vinayagar.

Vinayagar, who is also known by various names like Ganesha, Ganapati, Vigneshwara and Vighnaharta, is the God of wisdom and prosperity, and destroyer of obstacles.

Another devotee, R. Surya, 35, said he smashed 100 coconuts after recovering from a serious illness last year.

“I had been having fever and headaches and had seen several doctors for more than two months but after making the vow, I recovered within two weeks. I am indebted to Vinayagar for good health,” he said.

There were also chariot processions bearing Lord Vinayagar's statue passing through several roads, where devotees made offerings to the deity.

Some temples even had elephants to give blessings to devotees.
