NANOTECHNOLOGY can turn our troops into soldiers of future – with military equipment that can better protect them against enemies and make them more alert when operating in biological-, chemical- and nuclear-contaminated environments, says Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
“I believe nanotechnology can dramatically improve warfare technology in the next few decades.
“Lighter, stronger, smarter and heat resistant nano-structures can be used in the production of weapons or to make military transportation faster, together with strengthening armour and saving energy,” he said.
Najib added that military products could be made more intelligent by using nanosensors and nanocomputers with extreme sensitivity and accuracy.
“Therefore, without compromising performance, we need the right defence capabilities, the right doctrine and the right equipment to manage situations.
“We must compete on the basis of value-added skills and increase resources available for knowledge and technology transfer,” he said at the International Conference on Composite Materials and Nano-structures 2006 recently.
The growth of composite technology has created great progress in many fields, from sporting equipment to satellite technology, including important strides in the defence and security industry.
Najib said the Government was committed to support innovative research and development in composites and nanotechnology as an essential component of the country’s economic and social wellbeing.
