Siti Nurhaliza to sing at Bollywood film awards

PUTRAJAYA: Pop princess Siti Nurhaliza will be joining Bollywood heart-throb Shah Rukh Khan at the Global Indian Film Awards in Kuala Lumpur this August.

“It will be a golden opportunity if I get to perform with him during the show,” said the popular songbird who admits to being a fan of the Indian actor.

Siti Nurhaliza, who has been appointed ambassador of the awards show along with Akademi Fantasia winner Mawi, confirmed that she would be singing that night, where 300 Bollywood artistes and guests are expected to turn out.

“I haven’t chosen my song yet but I’ll try my best to showcase something Malaysian. After all, there is much similarity between our traditional Malay songs and Hindi songs,” said the artiste who recently launched her 11th album.

Siti Nurhaliza, who had recently confessed to being in love and in recent months had been linked to corporate figure Datuk Khalid Mohamad Jiwa, better known as “Datuk K”, refused to confirm gossip that she was getting married soon.

“I don’t want to talk about that,” she said with a laugh, brushing aside the question.

Bollywood stars to watch out for include Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Shahid Kapoor, Arjun Rampal, Kareena Kapoor, Rani Mukherjee, Priyanka Chopra and Bipasha Basu.

And host Malaysia is going all out to promote the glittering event which is expected to attract 2.6 billion television viewers worldwide. This is the second time GIFA is being staged. It made its debut in Dubai last year.

Event patron Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor wants everyone to make the show a quality and exciting event.

“I have convinced Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor that this will be a worthwhile event to support for the promotion of Malaysia as a premier tourist destination,” she said at the signing of the Memoradum of Understanding (MoU) yesterday between India-based Popcorn Entertainment Pte Ltd and One Big Option Sdn Bhd to bring the event here.

“Otherwise, Tengku Adnan will have to answer to the Deputy Prime Minister and he will in turn give me a hard time at home,” quipped the wife of Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

When told that the three-day event would be held from Aug 31 to Sept 2, Rosmah turned to Popcorn Entertainment chairman and celluloid action hero Sunil Shetty and persuaded him to extend the stay of the entourage of Indian actors and directors by two more days.

Apart from the grand finale awards night, other events lined up include a football match between Malaysian ministers and Bollywood actors, a fashion show featuring Indian actresses, a charity auction dinner and the premiere of a blockbuster movie from India.
