WITH colour pencils and crayons in their hands, some 150 children gathered at the Berjaya Times Square for the world's largest and most prestigious arts initiative for children - the Malaysian chapter of the Arts Olympiad 2005-2008.

Children deep in concentration as they participate in the Malaysian chapter of the Arts Olympiad in Berjaya Times Square recently.
Three finalists, from among the children, aged between eight and 12, will be selected to represent their states in the National Child Art Festival in Kuala Lumpur. This fest will be held in June.

The child artists for categories Original Art and Digital Art Photography will represent Malaysia in the International Child Art Festival in Washington next year.

Deputy organising committee chairman Low Gin Kye said the event provided young students with a chance to better understand the synergy between Art and Sport. Through their work, they strived to embrace the positive benefits of both fields, he said.

“Through this event, we would like to educate the children on the fact that the Olympic Games is not just about the medals, but more about the Olympic ideals which promote the balanced development of mind, body and character and the joy of effort.

“We would also like to teach them the value of role models and teamwork while observing the ethics of tolerance, generosity, unity, friendship and respect,” he said.

The Olympic Council of Malaysia supported the Malaysian chapter of the event, which was organised by Yellow House Society of Kuala Lumpur and Smart Kids in collaboration with the Education Ministry and the National Council of Welfare and Social Development.
