MALACCA: The Bukit Beruang forest reserve, one of the eight gazetted forest reserves in the state, is losing its trees fast – no thanks to illegal loggers.
This despite the reserve being within a radius of 5km from both the state forestry office and the Chief Minister’s office.
DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng took the media into the forest reserve yesterday to personally see the extent of the illegal logging, which is believed to have started six months ago.
“I urge the state government to investigate officers in the relevant departments and look for the culprit who felled the trees in the forest reserve,” said Lim.
The Bukit Beruang forest reserve, the only forest reserve in the Melaka Tengah district, covers some 164ha of land.
Samsudin Sueet, the Malacca forestry officer, could not be reached for comment.
