NGO seeks funds for clinics in Pakistan

Mercy Malaysia is seeking funds to set up 10 mobile medical clinics at earthquake-hit areas in Pakistan.

Its committee member Dr Heng Aik Cheng said the 10 clinics would be staffed by Pakistani medical officials.

“The 10 clinics will be pre-fabricated structures that will be shipped to Pakistan,” he said in Kota Kinabalu last week after receiving a contribution of RM30,000 on behalf of Mercy Malaysia for South Asia earthquake victims.

The contribution from Sutera Harbour Resort of Kota Kinabalu was handed over by its chief operating officer Praba Menon.

Dr Heng, a bone and joint surgery specialist, led Mercy Malaysia’s first team to Pakistan within days after the earthquake struck on Oct 10.

Mercy Malaysia has established a field hospital in Bagh and each of its teams spend two weeks in Pakistan.

Currently, the seventh team is headed by Sabah-based Queen Elizabeth Hospital medical officer Dr Cheah Phee Kheng.

The latest team includes volunteers consisting of four doctors in fields of anaesthesia, orthopaedics, family medicine and paediatrics.

Also in the team are a midwife, a lawyer and a businesswoman, who will be in charge of logistics in Bagh, where they will operate the field hospital and assist at the district hospital.

The latest toll of the South Asian earthquake stood at 86,000 dead and 69,260 injured although unconfirmed reports claimed more than 100,000 had perished in the disaster.
