Swiss roll maker eschews colouring and flavouring

IT IS most convenient to use artificial colouring and flavouring when producing tasty confectionaries and pastries.

But all of this is a big no-no for Swiss Roll purveyor Jennifer Liau from Ipoh.

The 62-year-old owner of JJ Cakes & Swiss Rolls on Jalan Chung Thye Phin places great emphasis on using only the best natural ingredients in her Swiss rolls — from vegetables and fruits, to nuts and cheese.

“One can taste the grounded bits such as green apples, dragon fruit, pumpkin and carrots in the cakes.

Soft and fluffy: Only real and fresh fruits and vegetables are used to make the spongy cake layer of the JJ Swiss Rolls.

“The flavours of the rolls all come from these ingredients that are used,” said Liau, whose Swiss rolls are not only fresh but are available in dozens of different flavours.

There is durian, cempedak, spinach cream cheese, passion fruit and chestnut puree, with chocolate and coffee flavours being the most saleable items.

Liau said her customers come from as far as Kuala Lumpur, Cameron Highlands and Penang.

“We also make a special delivery to Penang whenever there are orders exceeding 300 rolls,” she added.
