Gulbis to compete in Malaysian Open

PETALING JAYA: Latvian Ernests Gulbis has confirmed his participation in the US$1mil (RM 3.3mil) Malaysian Open ATP 250 at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil from Sept 20-28.

The world No. 10 will join world No. 8 Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina, world No. 9 Milos Raonic of Canada and world No. 12 Kei Nishikori of Japan in the nine-day championship.

The 25-year-old Gulbis made his first career Grand Slam semi-final at last month’s French Open. Gulbis has won two titles this season – the Marseille Open in February and Nice Open in May.

Gulbis, who has enjoyed wins over top stars like Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and Roger Federer in his career, is excited at the prospect of playing in Malaysia for the first time.

“I have not played much in Asia, so I am very interested to go there and see everything,” said Gulbis, who was a second-round casualty at Wimbledon.

“I hope tennis fans in Malaysia will like me since I am not very well known there,” he added.
