Nafiizwan clears first hurdle in qualifying

PETALING JAYA: Mohd Nafiizwan Adnan put his recent disappointment behind him to inch closer towards a main draw spot at the British Open.

The national No. 1 did not have a great start to the year, losing in the semi-finals of the Wimbledon Club Squash Squared Open in London last week. The world No. 30 suffered a demoralising 11-9, 3-11, 8-11, 6-11 loss to world No. 35 Tom Richards of England.

Nafiizwan, however, recovered strongly to beat England’s Bradley Masters 8-11, 11-7, 11-3, 11-4 in the first qualifying round of the British Open at the University of Hull on Sunday.

The Terengganu player next meets world No. 38 Adrian Waller, also of England, for a place in the tournament proper. The 27-year-old Waller defeated 19-year-old compatriot Patrick Rooney 11-6, 8-11, 11-3, 11-2 in the first round.

“I played much better today. It wasn’t great but I’m happy to win this match after my loss at the Wimbledon tournament last week,” said Nafiizwan.

“I tried a few things that didn’t work during the Wimbledon semi-finals. It worked out really well this time.”

There was, however, no joy for national No. 2 Ivan Yuen. He was beaten 11-9, 7-11, 11-7, 4-11, 2-11 by world No. 27 Gregoire March of France.

In the women’s event, Malaysia’s sole challenger is world No. 7 Nicol David.

The Penangite, fresh from winning the Ciudad de Floridablanca Open in Colombia earlier this month, is seeded sixth. She takes on a qualifier in the tournament proper’s first round today.
