PETALING JAYA: Youngster Sanjay Singh Chal is aiming for a career breakthrough when he competes in the sixth leg of the US$10,000 (RM31, 640) Malaysian Tour Squash Circuit (SSJM) at the Kangar Squash Complex in Perlis on Tuesday.
The 20-year-old Sarawakian who won the Sukma (Malaysia Games) gold medal at the same venue in May, has never reached the quarter-finals of a PSA Challenger 10 event.
But a decent showing at the Malaysian Open last week, when the world No. 156 Sanjay pushed world No. 70 Lucas Serme of France before losing in 61 minutes in four sets, has given him a confidence boost.
And Sanjay who takes on team-mate Gurshan Singh in the first round, believes he has the best opportunity to move up in the game.
“This is really a good opportunity to play my best squash and improve on my rankings,” said Sanjay.
“I felt that I played one of my best matches against Lucas last week. Fitness however was what I lacked most as I was unable to keep up towards the end of the match.
“But I finally get a pretty decent draw and I definitely need to take full advantage of it,” added Sanjay.
A win for Sanjay in the first round will pit him against fifth seed Elvinn Keo in the second round with a clash against third seed Harinderpal Sandhu awaits in the quarter-finals.
