KUALA LUMPUR: Air rifle shooter Nur Ayuni Farhana Abdul Halim has big dreams.
The 24-year-old sharp-shooter from Kuantan is eyeing another golden outing in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in July.
She made a golden debut in the New Delhi Games four years ago when she partnered Nur Suryaini Mohd Taibi to win the 10m air rifle pairs’ event. She also bagged a silver in the individual event.
Nur Ayuni has qualified for the Glasgow Games in the 10m air rifle event after scoring 594 points to surpass the 590 qualifying mark – which was the sixth-placed score of the event at the last edition in New Delhi in 2010 – in the Selangor Open in February.
Nur Ayuni, who returned from Langkawi last Saturday after attending a 10-day centralised training, said that she’s in good shape – physically and mentally.
“It was a good training session for us in Langkawi .. away from the busy Subang Shooting Range. We had a good time there, training hard and also enjoying the lovely environment,” said Nur Ayuni, who featured in the Asian Air Gun Championships in Kuwait in February.
That has given her the confidence to declare that she’s ready to go one better in Glasgow and win both the individual and pairs’ golds in 10m air rifle event.
“No one expected us to win the gold in the pairs’ event in New Delhi but we defied the odds. I’m confident that with hard work, proper training and more international competitions, we will be able to achieve the double in Glasgow.
“My mission now is to maintain a consistent score in local and international competitions to further boost my confidence for the Games,” said Nur Ayuni, who has a personal best of 597 in the air rifle event.
She is still hoping to qualify for two more rifle events – 50m prone and 50m three position – in Glasgow. And she intends to do just that when she competes in the Tun Hanif Trophy shooting championships at the Subang Shooting Range on Thursday.
Nur Ayuni said that she would also take part in the World Rifle competition in Munich next month in preparation for the Games.
