PETALING JAYA: Muhd Rafiq Ismail (pic) was only 15 when the inaugural World Singles Championships – dubbed the most prestigious event for individual bowlers – was held in Cyprus in 2012.

Then, Esther Cheah was Malay­sia’s best performer, settling for bronze after losing in the semi-finals.
