PETALING JAYA: ONE FC vice-president and former mixed martial arts middleweight world champion Rich Franklin believes a Malaysian can one day reign supreme in ONE FC. All that is lacking is depth.
Franklin who held the UFC middleweight title for 497 days, successful defending it twice against Nate Quarry and David Loiseau said he believes Malaysian fighters have what it takes to be in the top echelon in MMA.
“Malaysia has some top-level fighters like Ev Ting, great fighter. It’s just the matter of depth though. So once you get past the first few, then things will start to take off. Because it’s so new here, you don’t have a large talent pool to pull from but that’s what’s going to change,” said Franklin after the open work out at Paradigm Mall on Friday.
“There are great fighters in this nation but they’re few in numbers. Two, five years from now there is going to be a much larger talent pool, which means we’ll have a lot more talent to pull from when we (ONE FC) come here. And absolutely, I believe the top-level fighters here on the right night can hold a belt for ONE FC.”
