PETALING JAYA: National junior shuttler Cheam June Wei advanced into the men’s singles quarter-finals at the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in Nanjing, China.
The 17-year-old kept a clean sheet in Group C after beating Turkey’s Muhammad Ali Kurt 21-14, 21-6 in 31 minutes at the Sports Gymnasium Institute on Tuesday. Third seed June Wei’s last eight opponent is India’s Aditya Joshi.
June Wei also reached the last eight of the mixed doubles event. He and Ng Tsz Yau of Hong Kong carved out a 22-21, 21-19 victory over the China’s Lin Guipu and South Korean Kim Ga-eun to top Group C.
June Wei-Tsz Yau will take on Malaysia’s Lee Ying Ying and Taiwan’s Lu Chia-hung for a place in the semi-finals. Ying Ying-Chia-hung beat Mexican Luis Ramon Garido and Estonian Kristin Kuuba 21-17, 21-18 in their final Group D match.
There was, however, no joy for Ying Ying in the women’s singles. She was beaten 18-21, 14-21 by second seed He Bingjiao of China in her final Group H match.
At the Nanjing OSC Natatorium, all the Malaysian swimmers failed to make an impact.
Lim Ching Hwang clocked 24.26 in the men’s 50m freestyle heats to finish eighth out of eight participants. Yap Siew Hui also finished last in the women’s 50m butterfly heats with a time of 28.50.
Angela Chieng Chui Fei’s time of 9:00.61 in the women’s 800m freestyle was only good enough for seventh place in her heats.
In artistic gymnastics, Jeremiah Loo finished last in the 18-man individual all-around final with 74.525 points.
At the Zhongshan International Golf Club, Sukma gold medallist Low Khai Jie made a good start by carding a one-under 71 to be placed joint 15th out of 32 golfers.
Kan Kah Yan, however, had a forgettable opening round. She posted a seven-over 79 to be placed joint 26th out of the 30 women golfers.
