PETALING JAYA: Teenage diving sensation Mohd Nazreen Abdullah and the Amateur Swimming Union of Malaysia (ASUM) will receive the SAM-100PLUS Young Athlete and Most Dynamic Association of the Year awards respectively for 2013.
The 16-year-old Kuala Lumpur diver created waves at the Myanmar SEA Games last December where he bagged two gold medals in the 10m individual and synchronised event (with Ooi Tze Liang).
Nazreen also achieved a creditable ninth placing at the world junior championships in Adelaide two years ago. In addition, he competed at the Asian Diving Cup in Singapore, Asian Youth Games in Nanjing and the Australian Youth Olympic Festival in Sydney.
Nazreen will receive the honour during the Sportswriters Association of Malaysia (SAM) annual awards ceremony at the Petaling Jaya Hilton on Thursday, where Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin is the guest of honour.
The other winners include the Malaysian Junior hockey team (Special Award) and national middle distance runner Mohd Jironi Riduan (Comeback Athlete).
The highlight of the awards ceremony will be the SAM-100PLUS-KBS “Athlete of the Year” award. The six nominees are Lee Chong Wei (badminton), Nicol David (squash), Pandelela Rinong-Leong Mun Yee (synchro diving), Ho Mun Hwa (wushu), Diana Bong (wushu) and Sazali Abdul Samad (body building).The winner will receive RM10,000.
