PETALING JAYA: Now that karate’s fate at the 2015 Singapore SEA Games is almost sealed, the Malaysia Karate Federation (Makaf) are demanding answers from the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM).
Karate, along with six other sports – weightlifting, volleyball, boxing, equestrian, floorball and chess – all appealed to be included in the list of sports to be contested in Singapore next year.
However, the SEA Games Federation’s rules and regulations committee meeting on Saturday gave boxing, equestrian and floorball the nod.
“We’re very disappointed with the outcome and will seek clarification from OCM on this,” said Makaf honorary secretary Vincent Chen.
“They say that the decision will be made in April, but it seems to be a lost cause now.
“Singapore is the host and it’s their prerogative (to form the list). But the way we see it, it’s been left too late and little can be done to change that.”
According to Vincent, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Myanmar, Laos and the Philippines have all backed the bid to get karate into the 2015 Games.
What’s more, the South-East Asian Championships are held every year for countries in the region to compete as a platform for development as well as to test and gauge the level of their fighters ahead of bigger competitions.
Karate, which was introduced at the 1987 Jakarta SEA Games, has only been excluded twice in the 27-year history of the Games – Singapore (1993) and Brunei (1999).
Makaf are also keen to see an end to the juggling of sports in the SEA Games.
The South-East Asian Karatedo Federation will hold their congress in Vietnam soon and Vincent is determined to bring up the matter in a bid to find a solution to the problem.
“We’ll definitely discuss the matter. Since we already know the Games’ host city from 2017 (Malaysia) to 2023 (Cambodia), let’s work on ensuring karate’s place in the editions to come,” said Vincent.
“For now, we have the Asian Games to concentrate on ... that’s our priority this year.”
The 30 sports confirmed earlier for the 2015 SEA Games were aquatics, archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, billiards and snooker, bowling, canoeing, cycling, fencing, football, golf, gymnastics, hockey, judo, netball, pencak silat, rugby 7s, sailing, sepaktakraw, shooting, softball, squash, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, traditional boat race, triathlon, waterski and wushu.
