Former Moto3 rider Amirul to race Cub Prix again

PETALING JAYA: Former Moto3 rider Amirul Hafiq Azmi (pic) has a chance to revive his racing career.

The 21-year-old rider will race for Team Onexox TKKR Racing in Round 7 of the Petronas AAM Malaysian Cub Prix Championship at Pasir Puteh Central in Kelantan this weekend.

Amirul, whose stint in the Moto3 world championship ended in 2014, will be replacing Mohd Haiekal Akmal Zakaria who suffered a broken left leg in Melaka last month.

“Haiekal requires a long recuperation period with the possibility of missing out the remainder of the season,” said team manager Alizan Tambi.

“We need a replacement rider in the CP150 category. Amirul may have left the Cub Prix stage a long time ago but his test results showed he had not lost his touch.”

The last time Amirul took part in a Cub Prix race was in 2011.

“If he shows good progress, there is a possibility we will sign him up for the rest of the season,” added Alizan.
