ASSEN (Holland): Spain’s Aleix Espargaro took pole position for Saturday’s Dutch MotoGP race, finishing ahead of reigning champion Marc Marquez, who is aiming for an eighth consecutive win this season.
It is the first-ever pole position for Yahama rider Espargaro, who made his intentions clear by setting the fastest lap ever recorded at the current Assen track on Thursday.
Espargaro, who set a time of 1:38.789 outpaced Marquez by a comfortable 1.405 seconds in changing and difficult weather conditions, with another Spaniard, Dani Pedrosa in third, 1.943 seconds off the pace.
Italy’s Andrea Iannone will lead the second row, finishing fourth fastest at 1.997 seconds behind on a Ducati, with Britain’s Cal Crutchlow on another Ducati alongside him.
Championship leader Jack Miller of Australia sped to a fourth pole position on his Honda for the Moto3 race with a time of 1:42.240 yesterday.
Miller, who has so far notched up 117 points in the Moto3 championship, finished 0.116 seconds ahead of Spaniard Alex Marquez on a Honda, who is currently lying in fifth position on the log with 85 points. - AFP
