PETALING JAYA: National Moto2 rider Hafizh Syahrin has secured his career’s best ever position on the starting grid for today’s Catalunya Grand Prix.
The PETRONAS Raceline rider clocked quickest lap of 1:47.855 to place 14th in the timesheet during the qualifying session yesterday.
The time set by Hafizh was 1.286s off the pace behind pole sitter Spaniard Esteve Rabat (1:46.569).
Mika Kallio of Finland (1:47.140) and Maverick Vinales of Spain (1:47.192) came in second and third respectively.
“I don’t have any big problem with the bike in this session,” said Hafizh.
“We can still improve with a little bit of fine tuning on both bike and my riding.
“I am happy with the result and I will give my best for the race tomorrow (today).”
Hafizh previous best qualifying position was during Argentina GP back in April when he secured 17th spot and finished the race three rungs lower.
Team manager Barry Leong could not hide his delight over Hafizh’s impressive pace.
“Everyone was happy to see this kind of result,” he said.
“With 9 mins remaining in the session he was in 11th spot, but the extreme heat was a little difficult for him to do better.
“We know that Hafizh is capable of a qood qualifying with today’s time, he can improve further for sure.
“The team did a good job in preparing and improving the bike and Hafizh did well by delivering the best qualifying position so far. Eventually, we do hope for a better race result tomorrow.”
