PETALING JAYA: Rookie Ahmad Afif Amran earned his career first CP130 win in style after outclassing the usual suspects in Round Two of the Petronas AAM Malaysian Cub Prix Championships at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium in Muar.
The Petronas Yamaha-CKJ rider took the chequered flag ahead of senior Ahmad Fazli Sham in the final moments of Saturday’s race, wrapping up the gruelling 18-lap challenge in 12:28.798.
Fazli, representing Petronas Yamaha Maju Motor, finished 0.247 of a second slower in 12:29.045 while Afif’s team-mate, Mohd Affendi Rosli, was third in 12:33.093.
In a dramatic race, Affendi zoomed into the lead but was overtaken by pole-sitter Mohd Zaqhwan Zaidi in the second lap.
However, Givi Honda Yuzy Racing’s Zaqhwan’s luck ran out when his engine blew out in the fourth lap, taking out Mohd Haiekal Akmal Zakaria and Mohd Emir Firdaus Hasan in the process. This put Affendi back in the lead.
But Affendi, who was caught up in heavy smoke behind Zaqhwan, lost focus and fell out of pace, allowing Afif and Fazli to take control of the race.
“Today is a very special day. Not only did I manage to win my first CP130 race, I also have my Petronas team-mates with me by my side,” said an overjoyed Afif.
“I didn’t expect to win because of the bad start. But I found myself with the front group after the pile-up.
“I just kept a consistent pace and overtook Fazli at the second last turn to cross the finish line first.”
Afif now has 33 points to lead the CP130 overall standings. Affendi is second with 29 points, followed by Harian Metro Y-TEQ SCK Honda Racing’s Norizman Ismail, who has 28 points after finishing eighth in the race.
