Mohd Zaqhwan Zaidi qualified fourth on the grid for the Petronas Asia Road Racing Championships race after clocking 1:05.204 at the Sepang International Circuit.
SEPANG: Musashi Boon Siew Honda rider Mohd Zaqhwan Zaidi has been focusing on improving his fitness to propel him to greater heights in the Petronas Asia Road Racing Championships (ARRC) this season.
The 19-year-old, who neglected this aspect of his training last season, has been regularly visiting the gym to prepare for the ARRC season.
“When I saw other riders in the world championship like Hafizh (Syahrin) and Azlan (Shah Kamaruzaman) improved a lot when they incorporated fitness training, I knew that was what I needed to do.
“When we did the pre-season test in February, I was surprised to see that I was able to catch up with the fast guys. It must have been the training,” said Zaqhwan.
He qualified fourth on the grid for the race today after clocking 1:05.204 at the Sepang International Circuit yesterday. Japan’s Katsuaki Fujiwara of BEET Kawasaki took the pole position in 1:05.184.
With an encouraging qualifying yesterday, Zaqhwan is hopeful this season will give him a podium finish, which eluded him last year. His best result last season was an eighth place in India.
“I’m more confident this season. I’m riding a new bike but I know how to handle it better. The mechanics also did a good job helping with the settings. I believe I can be a title contender if I stay consistent,” said Zaqhwan.
