PETALING JAYA: Seasoned campaigner Mohd Zamri Baba is determined to start the new season of the Petronas Asia Road Racing championship on Friday despite still recovering from a leg injury.
The 31-year-old Musashi Boon Siew Honda Racing rider will compete in the SuperSports 600cc race in Sepang from April 18-20 despite having fractured his leg during dirt track training six weeks ago.
The injury has forced Zamri to miss out on the official pre-season test and just last week during the first-leg of the Malaysian Cub Prix Championship he needed the help of a cane to walk.
However, Zamri is determined to race.
“I have had some intensive treatment on my leg and it feels a lot better now. I am 90% fit and my training is going well. Still, it’s a shame to start the season with an injury but this won’t stop me from giving my best this weekend,” said Zamri on Tuesday.
The Malaysian rider claims it is easier to ride the bike than to walk.
“I can’t wait to get on the bike and give back something to the team for all their patience and hard work over the season break,” he added, pointing out that he had already had two private tests with the team.
Zamri was roped in by team Musashi Boon Siew Honda with the mission of attaining their triple crown in the SuperSports 600cc class.
“I can’t afford to lose points even though we have a long season. Last year, my DNF (Did Not Finish) result from Race 2 in Sepang affected my rankings adversely. I don’t intend to repeat the same mistake now that I represent a winning team. Every point is valuable,” he said.
The SuperSports 600cc practice sessions are on Friday followed by the qualifying practice on Saturday and the final race on Sunday. Admission is free.
