‘Kapchai’ races a fertile ground for talent

SEPANG: The KBS MAM Kapchai Endurance Race is a perfect platform to complement the development of local talent towards having a Malaysian MotoGP rider in the future.

Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said that besides efforts by private entities to develop riders for the Moto3 and Moto2 championships, the Kapchai race serves more as a grassroots development to unearth more talent.

“Since the race began in 2012, the number of participants have increased to up to 300 this year. Besides doing what is necessary for Moto3 and Moto2 riders, events like this provide the perfect platform to find new talent in motorcycle racing,” Khairy said before flagging off the Kapchai race at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) on Saturday.

The KBS MAM Kapchai Endurance Race is for underbone bikes and runs for four hours.

Teams, comprising two or three riders, compete in four different categories according to engine capacity.

“Perhaps, in the long term, we can look into having more circuits around the country as we want the sport to grow,” said Khairy.

“It doesn’t have to be a state-of-the-art circuit like SIC but a simple yet complete one with safety measures would suffice.”

Meanwhile, the Kapchai race was won by Mohd Hafiza Rofa, Mohd Shafiq Rasol and Mohd Helmi Azman of Kajang Minimoto. The trio completed 76 laps to win the race.

The partnership of brothers Mohd Adam and Mohd Ibrahim Norrdin of team JDT 27 finished second with 75 laps while Abdul Muhaimin Roslan and Mohd Fadzlin Mohd Noor of Team Chicanos Racing were third with 73 laps.
