Olak-PKT win promotion to Division One

KUALA LUMPUR: Old La Sallians Association of Klang (Olak-PKT) won promotion to next year’s Division One and a place in the knockout stage of the MHC-MILO-NSC Malaysian Junior Hockey League after a 1-1 draw with Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS).

The one point was enough to assure Olak a top-two finish in Group X of the Division Two second round playoffs at the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Friday.

But Olak’s place in the Division Two final is still not confirmed. BJSS have a chance of pipping them to the final spot if they beat Nur Insafi by a four-goal margin on Saturday.

BJSS were unlucky not to collect full points on Friday. They took the lead in the 20th minute through Abdul Syafiq Abdul Razak and had full control of the match. But they were let down by poor finishing.

Olak were a spent-force and only a late strike by Mohamed Shafieq Dzulkifli in the 65th minute saved them the blushes.

Olak team manager Joseph De Silva was unhappy with his players’ performance but was pleased to achieve their target of moving up to Division One next year.

“The Division Two final is another thing altogether. It is a waiting game and it will all depend on the result of the match between Nur Insafi and BJSS,” he said.

BJSS coach S. Prakash said their woeful finishing in the later stages of the match cost them dearly.

“They played well. Still, we could have done better. But it is not over yet.

“We play Nur Insafi next and a win alone is not enough. We need to win by a big margin to make the final.

“We aim to give it a good try. But for us, a win is also very important as it will give us a place in Division One next year,” said Prakash.

In Group Y, Politeknik Johor and MSP Pahang Juniors also confirmed their places in Division One. Both have also made the cut for the knockout stage which starts on Feb 28.

Politeknik showed they are the team to beat in Division Two when they whipped winless Bakat MSSK-PHK 8-0 in their opening match on Friday.

Mohamed Ashran Hamsani (third and 21st minutes), Mohamed Kamarul Ariffin (28th), Lukmaan Nul Hakim (33rd), Mohamed Ain Rahman (42nd), Mohamed Firdaus Fauzi (52), Mohamed Fareez (53) and Zairy Zulkarnain (60) were the scorers.

Politeknik are set to make the Division Two final as all they need is a draw against MSP Pahang Juniors on Saturday.
