SHAH ALAM: Galven Kendall Green brilliantly sank a 25-foot birdie putt on the second extra hole to beat a spirited K. Rhaasrikanesh to the 44th Selangor Amateur Open title.
The 17-year-old Galven went into the final round at the Kelab Golf Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah (KGSAAS) with a three-shot lead only to squander his advantage.
He had to birdie the last hole for a four-over 76 to join Rhaasrikanesh at the top of the leaderboard on four-over 220.
Rhaasrikanesh was in his element, mixing five birdies against a bogey for a 68 to claim the clubhouse lead. He had started the day eight shots behind Galven.
The duo were made to wait for more than an hour for the playoff due to a heavy downpour.
At the first extra hole at the par-4 18th, both Galven and Rhaasrikanesh settled for pars.
The second extra hole was also at the 18th.
Rhaasrikanesh’s second shot found a greenside bunker but he managed to hit it within 10 feet of the hole.
But Galven calmly rolled in a birdie from 25 feet to seal victory.
“It was a hard day. I’m so glad that I managed to pull through,” said three-time national champion Galven.
“At the second extra hole, I just want to roll the putt as close to the hole as possible. But I got the right line, the right speed and it went in for a birdie,” he added.
