PETALING JAYA: Golfer Ben Leong earned a morale-boosting win after emerging victorious at the PGM I&P Group Closed Championship.
The 28-year-old posted a flawless final round of seven-under 64 for a four-day 14-under 270 total at the Kinrara Golf Club in Puchong.
His effort was enough to fend off Shaifubari Muda’s challenge, who shot a stunning 10-under 61, for a one-shot victory.
The Sabahan, who has been plagued by a back injury, said he was pleased to finally got back to winning ways.
“This is certainly a sweet victory for me,” said the one-time Asian Tour winner, whose bogey-free round was highlighted by three birdies on the front nine and another four on the back nine.
“Playing less aggressively has helped me stay in contention and my goal is to get back on the Asian Tour.”
Ben picked up RM27,200 to take his season's earnings to RM56,801.67 and helped him break into the top 10 on the Order of Merit in ninth spot.
There was a huge gap between the top two and the rest of the field as Wilson Choo (64), Danny Chia (65) and Shaaban Hussin (70) were tied for third on seven-under 277.
The next event on the PGM Tour’s schedule is the Sabah Championship at the Sabah Golf & Country Club in Kota Kinabalu from Sept 3-6.
