Pimnipa takes lead at Malaysian Ladies Amateur meet

KUALA LUMPUR: Thailand’s Pimnipa Panthong fired an opening round of six-under 66 to head the leaderboard at the Malaysian Ladies Amateur Open on Tuesday.

The 16-year-old’s brilliant display, highlighted by seven birdies, allowed her to steer four strokes clear ahead of second placed Gauri Monga of India, who signed off the day with two-under 70 at the Sungai Long Golf and Country Club.

“Seven birdies in any round is pretty good. I managed to pull some very good approach shots to the pin,” said Pimnipa.

Kluang-born Chong Yong, outshoned her more illustrious compatriots to emerge as the best local player. She is tied on third spot with Orchinnicha Konsunthea of Thailand on 71.

Another Thai golfer, Chayanit Wanghaporn, is in fourth spot after carding a 72.
