Sukree, Gunn share lead at Malacca meet

PETALING JAYA: Seasoned campaigner Mohd Sukree Othman and Thailand’s Gunn Charoenkul both posted identical two-under 70 scores to share the lead and set up a final day showdown at the PGM-Asean PGA Malacca Championship.

The pair are tied at the top of the leaderboard with a combined three-round total of five-under 211 at the Ayer Keroh Country Club.

But the RM170,000 event could be won by anyone as the chasing pack is not far behind.

Third-placed Pravee Visalkit is just one shot adrift, followed by the trio of Iylia Jamil, Airil Rizman and Panuphol Pittayarat – who are certainly still very much in contention at a further stroke behind in joint fourth spot.

Delighted to be in pole position and to have a shot at the title on Saturday, Sukree however said he was still far from comfortable about his game.

“I’m not yet where I want to be with my ball-striking, but mentally I am all right,” said Sukree, who is chasing his sixth PGM Tour title.

“Today I started well, shooting birdie-par-birdie before adding another on the 15th hole. But I gave one shot back with a bogey right after that.

“Overall I’m just happy to be in with a chance at the title.”

Opening day leader Gunn, on the other hand, must have been relieved to have bounced back from Thursday’s setback where he carded a two-over 74. He notched five birdies to offset three bogeys.

Gunn is bidding for his second Asean PGA Tour title of the season after claiming victory at the Singha Esan Open last month.
